Getting dental implants in Meridian, Idaho, has never been easier. Dr. Nathan Williams and the staff of New Leaf Dental will perform a thorough dental examination and discuss possible treatment solutions with you. If you qualify as a good candidate for dental implants, your dentist will provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision. Dental implants do more than improve your smile. They also offer health benefits as well.
1. Extract the damaged tooth – The dentist will first extract the damaged tooth. In certain cases, they may need to remove multiple teeth. The dentist might also recommend dental implants for dentures. If this is the chosen plan, the dentist will extract all teeth and place various dental implants. Your dentist will discuss all your options with you.
2. Prepare the jawbone – A bone graft helps build up the area and secure it more effectively. Depending on the size of the bone, the surgeon may need to use two grafts before placing the implant. Grafts stabilize the bone and create a strong foundation for the implant.
3. Put the dental implant in place – Once the bone grafts have healed, the implant’s metal post will be put in place. Because it is embedded directly into the bone, the bony tissue will remodel around it, holding it securely in place. Securing the implant within the jawbone, makes it a permanent solution and will prevent erosion of the bone.
4. Allow time for bone growth – Before your dentist can complete the dental implant process, the implant will have to be secure. This can take six to eight weeks (sometimes a little longer) depending on how quickly the bone heals around the dental implant.
5. Put the abutment in place – The abutment is what the crown of the dental implant attaches to. In order for the abutment to be put in place, your dentist will have to reopen the gums so the implant can be seen. The abutment will be put in place and the gums will be closed. The abutment will be above the gum line so the crown fits naturally without any gaps.
6. Attach artificial tooth – Before the dentist extracts your tooth (or teeth), he will make an impression of it. The crown, or artificial tooth, that is created for your dental implant will look exactly like the natural one that was extracted. Once the implant and abutment are both in place, the dentist can attach the artificial tooth.
