Cleanings and Exams

The path to a healthy, stunning smile starts with routine cleanings and exams

At New Leaf Dental, we are surrounded by beauty — both the lovely Treasure Valley region and the many patients that call Meridian, Boise, Nampa, Caldwell, Eagle, Mountain Home, Middleton, and the Star area “home.” When oral health is maintained or restored, attractive and happy smiles follow!

In addition, our dentists appreciate that cleanings and exams promote the overall health and wellbeing of our patients. The function of your teeth and gums has many implications for the health of your “system”; teeth that are pleasing to the eye, comfortable, and work “as designed” support proper chewing, digestion, nutrition, restful sleep, clear speech, and self-confidence.

It has also been well-established that conditions like gum disease can wreak havoc on organs and systems well outside of the oral cavity. Bacteria and inflammation do not simply “stay put.” These threats can travel to other parts of your body through your bloodstream. For this reason, advanced periodontal (gum) disease is a known risk factor for heart disease and other severe, systemic conditions.

So, when you maintain checkups as directed by your friendly dentist at New Leaf Dental, you are doing your whole body a world of good.

What to expect

Standard checkups are scheduled once every six months. These checkups include a complete oral examination by one of our dentists and a professional cleaning by one of our skilled, registered dental hygienists. If you smoke or have other risk factors for conditions like gum disease, we will advise that you visit our practice more frequently.

If active inflammation or other problems are present, these situations also call for follow-up visits. Restorative treatments may include a “deep clean” known as scaling and root planing. This technique removes plaque and bacteria from under the gum line and smooths the tooth roots that attract germs. Gum disease is resolved before it progresses and threatens the teeth and supportive tissues.

Regardless of unique risks or needs, all patients will, at some point, experience:

  • A comprehensive dental exam: This exam involves evaluating the state of the teeth and gums. We also assess the function of the jaw joints, existing dental work and oral appliances, and other structures or tissues. Our dentists’ skills, combined with advanced diagnostics such as our CBCT (cone beam scanner), help us pinpoint even early-stage damage that is either asymptomatic or produces subtle symptoms. Very accurate, early diagnoses inform effective and proactive intervention that saves teeth!
  • Professional cleaning: Patients of all ages benefit from gentle and thorough cleaning by our hygienists. Armed with advanced tools and knowledge, they remove stubborn plaque (tartar) that does not budge with a standard toothbrush. They also use specialized tools to measure the pockets between the teeth and gums. This step helps to confirm the presence and extent of periodontal infections. We may recommend either oral hygiene and product modifications, SRP, or surgical interventions to promote healing and healthy attachments between the teeth and gums.
  • Tailored services and guidance: One of the most powerful things we can do during routine visits is to assess how our patients keep their mouths healthy when they are not at our office. We provide and demonstrate easy and effective cleaning techniques. Our dentists may also recommend preventive services during these appointments – from dental sealants that protect decay-prone back teeth to oral appliances that protect the teeth from injuries caused by contact sports.

Our “extended family” (our patients!) also appreciate that preventive care is more cost-effective than treatments designed to restore what was damaged or lost. We work closely with insurance companies, as many plans cover most (if not all) of the cost associated with preventive services. For those without insurance or who are concerned about out-of-pocket expenses, we are also proud providers of CareCredit® financing.

There is absolutely nothing to fear about visiting the dentist with our affordable, transparent, and quality gentle dental care. Get the care your smile and body need to be their healthy best.
